RESIDENTS in the Tewantin region can look to seeing light at the end of the tunnel with the traffic woes as a result of works to the Doonella bridge passing a significant milestone, with major concrete works completed.

The concrete relieving slab on the southern side of the bridge is in place, and Noosa Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services, Shaun Walsh, said the achievement is significant considering the persistent wet weather.

“We’ve encountered some challenging wet weather conditions, but good planning and coordination between council and contractors have seen solid progress made,” Mr Walsh said.

Traffic on the bridge is restricted to just one lane, with traffic lights on each end dictating the flow of traffic.

The original plan was to only allow traffic travelling eastbound to use the bridge, and westbound traffic required to use a lengthy detour.

The initial first few days of that system caused major traffic congestion, frustration from Tewantin businesses and was quickly replaced with a single-lane, two-way flow controlled by temporary traffic lights.

Mr Walsh said the single-lane traffic arrangements appear to be operating well.

“Our traffic staff are continually monitoring traffic, and driver behaviour has certainly helped to keep traffic moving, and we appreciate the patience, understanding and kindness while waiting at the traffic lights.”

Overnight closure of Doonella Bridge 

A full overnight road closure of Doonella Bridge will occur from this Sunday, August 30, from 8.15 pm until Monday, August 31 at 5 am. No traffic will be able to access the bridge during that time.

Pedestrians and cyclists can still use the adjacent pedestrian bridge during this overnight closure.

The closure is required to safely switch traffic onto the newly completed southern side of the bridge, to allow works to start on the northern side.

An important step in the project, signalling the completion of work on the southern side of the bridge. Final asphalt surfacing and relocation of the sewer main will take place later.

During the night works, there will be increased construction activity, lighting and additional noise. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption and complete the works as safely and efficiently as possible.

To access Tewantin, traffic will need to go via Beckmans Road during this period.
