Work has begun on the LNP’s $1 million election commitment to protect Mudjimba Island with the installation of 23 moorings commencing last week.

The 23 eco-friendly moorings will enable vessels to anchor safely without damaging fragile corals. The moorings are also seen as a win for eco-tourism ventures.

Maroochydore Member Fiona Simpson MP said she is proud to have delivered the Mudjimba Island Conservation and Education Package in the first year and a half of being in government.

“To see the moorings being installed today is really exciting, knowing that the island can be enjoyed without being damaged by anchors,” Ms Simpson said.

“These moorings will enable skippers to moor safely near the island without causing anchor damage.

“The installation of the moorings, alongside the education and research project with a local school launched last month, delivers a complete protection package for Mudjimba Island by supporting research, education and conservation for future generations.

“Mudjimba Island is so special to so many divers, boaties, fishers and the general community and its protection is paramount and has always been a priority of mine.”

About the moorings build
The moorings are being delivered by a small Queensland Company.

There will be two different types of moorings installed – 13 x T-class moorings for vessels up to six metres and 10 x A-class moorings for vessels up to ten metres

The moorings are made of large concrete blocks and polypropylene rope suspended off the seabed and will be installed in high-use areas outside the rocky reef to ensure maximum holding power.

The moorings will be free for skippers to use.
