Paws, paint and plenty of puppy cuddles at Smart Pups fundraiser
THERE will be plenty of wagging tails, puppy cuddles and a splash of colour at Smart Pups in Verrierdale next month, with the community invited to get behind a fundraiser for a new space designed to bring people closer to the charity’s work.
The Smart Pups Paint Party will be held at the organisation’s headquarters on Friday, September 11, with local artist Josh Wright creating a mural live on the side of a shipping container.
The event will run from 10 am to 2 pm at 136 Verrierdale Rd and is open to families, local businesses, animal lovers and anyone keen to see the work being done behind the scenes at one of the Sunshine Coast’s most valued charities.
Smart Pups does remarkable work, training and placing assistance dogs with children living with autism, diabetes, epilepsy, mobility challenges and other complex needs.
For families who receive one of the specially trained dogs, the impact can be life-changing, with the animals providing practical assistance as well as greater independence and confidence.
The fundraiser will help Smart Pups take another step forward with their Community Shed plans, which will be a space that will allow the charity to welcome school and disability groups, connect with the wider community and improve their existing training facilities.
Operations manager Sharni Pinder said the event would give people the chance to see the organisation’s work firsthand.
“We are excited about welcoming the local community to Smart Pups so people can connect with what we do, have some fun and see firsthand the first stages of the Smart Pups Community Shed,” Sharni said.
While Josh gets to work on the mural, visitors can enjoy a creative area for children, puppy cuddles, giveaways and a sausage sizzle.
Smart Pups merchandise will also be available to pre-order or purchase on the day.
Entry is just a $2 donation, with visitors invited to add their own paw print to the charity’s Wall of Paws.
Local businesses and corporate groups are also encouraged to attend, meet some of the dogs in training and find out more about how they can support the organisation.
Smart Pups was founded in 2011 on the Sunshine Coast by dog trainer and behaviourist Patricia McAlister, and now, some 15 years later, the not-for-profit has become an important part of the community, with its assistance dogs helping children and their families navigate some of life’s biggest challenges.
