Event Showcase: An evening of classical and flamenco guitar

Event Showcase
Karin Schaupp and Andrew Veivers

TWO OF Australia’s most accomplished guitarists will share the stage for the first time this month when classical virtuoso Karin Schaupp and acclaimed Spanish guitarist Andrew Veivers embark on a special Queensland tour.

Presented by Red Chair, the intimate concert series will take the pair to venues across South East Queensland with a performance at the Coolum Civic Centre this Saturday, June 13, from 7 pm.

Audiences will be in for a night of world-class musicianship with both artists, masters of their respective styles.

While this marks their first formal collaboration on stage, the musicians’ connection stretches back decades.

Schaupp and Veivers first met as university students, both studying under renowned guitar teacher Isolde Schaupp – Karin’s mother and mentor. That shared musical foundation has evolved into a long-standing friendship and mutual respect that now forms the basis of this highly anticipated performance.

The program will showcase the beauty and versatility of the guitar, drawing on Spanish and classical traditions while highlighting the contrasting styles that have made both performers favourites with audiences around the world.

Schaupp is widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading classical guitarists and is known for her expressive playing and distinctive tone.

Karen has performed on major stages throughout Europe, Asia, the Americas and Australia, and her recordings have attracted international acclaim and inspired composers to create new works specifically for her.

Veivers has built a reputation as one of Australia’s foremost Spanish guitar specialists, blending classical technique with the passion and rhythmic intensity of flamenco. His career has taken him to London, Madrid and Amsterdam, and he has toured internationally with groups including Flamenco Fire and The Saruzu Quartet.

Red Chair Director Angie Dunbavan said the collaboration brings together two musicians whose talents complement each other perfectly.

“This is a meeting of two exceptional artists who share a deep history and a real respect for each other’s craft,” Angie said.
“There’s an ease and connection in the way they play together that audiences will feel straight away.”

Rather than a large-scale concert production, the performances are designed to be intimate and immersive, allowing audiences to experience the subtle interplay, technical mastery and emotional depth of two world-class musicians performing side by side.
