Jetstar to suspend Sunshine Coast-Auckland flights

FROM October 24 this year, Jetstar will suspend its direct flights between the Sunshine Coast and Auckland, ending the international service less than two years after it first took off.

The airline confirmed that lower-than-expected passenger demand and rising operating costs were responsible for the suspension.

A Jetstar spokesperson said the airline had worked to build demand since the service launched in December 2024, but the route had not attracted enough passengers to remain commercially viable as a year-round service.

“We know this decision will be disappointing for customers who have valued the direct connection between the Sunshine Coast and Auckland,” the spokesperson said.

“Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to build demand on this route, passenger loads have not reached a sustainable level. With operating costs, including fuel and airport costs, remaining elevated, we need to redeploy the aircraft to routes where we can offer more customers more low fares.”

Passengers already booked on affected flights will be offered alternative travel arrangements or a refund if the new options do not suit their plans.

The decision has drawn criticism from local federal MPs, who say the loss of the service will be felt across the region.

Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien described the announcement as a significant setback for the Sunshine Coast, saying the direct connection had supported tourism, local businesses and employment.

“The direct connection between the Sunshine Coast and Auckland has been a vital link for tourism, business and local jobs,” Mr O’Brien said.

Mr O’Brien stated that regional international routes were particularly sensitive to rising costs and commercial pressures.

“When airlines are forced to make these decisions, it’s regional communities like ours that feel the impact first.”

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said the effects of losing an international air service extended well beyond the airport.

“Every international flight supports local accommodation providers, cafes, restaurants, retailers, transport operators and tourism businesses,” Mr Wallace said.
“When a route disappears, the impact is felt well beyond the airport fence. Regional communities depend on affordable, reliable aviation connections.”

Despite the setback, both MPs said they would continue advocating for stronger aviation links to the Sunshine Coast and work to ensure the region remained connected to international markets.
