Open Studios trail opens the doors to Sunshine Coast creativity
HAVE you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes before a painting is hung on a gallery wall or a ceramic bowl is ready for the kiln?
Art lovers will have the chance to find out when Open Studios Sunshine Coast returns from July 17-26, with the public invited into the workspaces of local artists across the region, and this trail is completely free to attend.
Held over two weekends, the annual event allows visitors to meet artists in their own studios, learn about their creative process and purchase original works directly from the people who made them.
The first weekend will focus on studios along the coast, while the second will showcase artists throughout the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
The self-guided trail stretches from the Glass House Mountains to Mapleton and along the coastline from Caloundra to Coolum – giving visitors the freedom to explore at their own pace.
This year’s event features artists working across a wide range of mediums, including ceramics, painting, drawing, glass, mixed media, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, jewellery, woodwork and metalwork.
Along the way, visitors can browse exhibitions, chat with artists about their techniques, take part in hands-on workshops at selected studios and discover the inspiration behind finished pieces.
Whether you’re an experienced collector looking for something unique or simply curious about the local arts scene, the trail offers a chance to experience the region’s creative community up close.
Spotlight on two local studios to visit
Among the studios opening their doors is Clayden Potters at 14 Tradewinds Avenue, Coolum Beach, a not-for-profit pottery club that has been part of the local community for more than 50 years.
The club brings together members aged from 15 to 95 who share a passion for ceramics through hand-building and wheel throwing. Throughout its milestone anniversary year, Clayden Potters has been celebrating with exhibitions, demonstrations and community events supporting local charities.
Visitors to the studio will be able to see members at work, explore a wide range of handmade ceramics and learn more about the craft in a welcoming environment that encourages creativity for people of all ages and abilities.
Clayden Potters will be open on July 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25 and 26.
Another local stop on the trail is the Niche Art Group, who will be exhibiting at the Coolum HeARTS Studio on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Sunrise Avenue.
Formed in 2023, the group brings together seven Sunshine Coast artists producing work across a variety of artistic styles and mediums.
Beyond creating art, members say the group provides an opportunity to connect, support one another and continue developing their skills in a relaxed and caring environment.
The exhibition also supports the work of Coolum HeARTS, with funds from exhibitions helping the not-for-profit organisation to continue their affordable arts, music and life skills programs for the local community.
The Niche Art Group will be open to visitors on July 18 and 19.
With dozens of studios participating across the Sunshine Coast, Open Studios Sunshine Coast offers a rare opportunity to step inside artists’ workplaces, hear the stories behind their creations and take home a piece of local art while supporting the region’s thriving creative community.
