Quota Coolum unveil ANZAC Day poppy tribute
THE LADIES from Quota Coolum Beach have created a one-of-a-kind poppy cascade which features 4,000 handcrafted poppies across three panels.
This ANZAC Day (April 25), two panels of the cascade will surround the Coolum Peregian RSL Sub-Branch cenotaph, and the third panel will be on display at the Mudjimba RSL Sub-Branch 11 am Commemorative Service.
The red floral emblem is recognised as a symbol of remembrance for Australian and Commonwealth service personnel who were or are involved in military endeavours.
Originating from the flowers that grew along the Western Front, it has been a symbol of remembrance, especially on ANZAC Day, for many years.
Quota Coolum Beach President Jude Mallett said their tribute could not have happened without the overwhelming support from the community.
“We received over 4,000 poppies, and they came from far and wide.
“We had poppies posted from Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and so many from the local surrounds, and everyone has been so supportive of this project.”
Each of the three panels is 2.5 x 1.25 metres, and every one of the 4,000 poppies has been hand-stitched onto the panels, and every one of the flowers has also been either hand crocheted or knitted.
“There have been many hands involved in making the poppies, and some even have a few unique features, such as a few with sparkles and one with a green centre and our ladies have put in so many hours sewing these all together.
“We want to thank everyone who was involved, and we are so appreciative of the support.”
