Colts victorious at home after two epic footy battles

BY PAT CAVANAGH

COOLUM Colts hosted Stanley River Wolves in their first home games of the 2026 season before a packed crowd at the Ronnie Cargill Oval on Saturday, April 11.

Both clubs had very successful 2025 seasons, and both are looking to build on that success throughout 2026.

The first half of the Round 2 A-Grade game was played at a frenetic pace with both teams throwing everything at each other.

It was end-to-end football with desperate defence the order of the day, and after an enthralling first half, the teams went to the break with a nil-all scoreline.

The second half was to be a repeat of the first half, with neither side able to convert their attack into four pointers.

The deadlock was broken in minute 71 when Bryce Cartwright kicked a penalty goal to give Coolum a 2-0 lead with nine minutes remaining.

Coolum were awarded another penalty in minute 79, thus making the final score 4-0 to Coolum in what could be described as one of the best and most exciting A Grade games ever seen at Coolum.

Coach Matt Smith said it was a tough first hit out against the defending premiers.

“The performance was a bit clunky with nine new players, but the team are happy to get off to a winning start and is looking forward to Caboolture this weekend.”

The Reserve Grade was a repeat of the 2025 Grand Final. On this occasion, Coolum came away as the victors with an impressive 46-0 win.

The U19s put in a gallant effort against Caloundra on their home turf on Sunday; however, they went down to the Sharks 34-10.

Player of the match for A Grade was Tayler McCann, Reserve Grade was Andrew Doyle, and Koby Holmes was the standout for the U19s. Congratulations to all!

The Club also remembered a former member earlier in the day with a minute’s silence held for local Matt Hill, who, amongst many things, was a Junior Colt and loyal supporter of the club.
