Coolum community comes together to sing out for mental health

THE PAT Cavanagh Centre at Coolum State School was filled with lots of joy and positivity on Saturday, October 10, as the tenth annual Coolum HeARTs led ‘Sing Out For Mental Health’ event was held.

The event, which coincides with Mental Health Awareness Week, is all about promoting the importance of good mental health and the activities which can foster that.

Coolum HeARTs President David said that singing was known to be good for health.

“We know it’s good for mental health, and at Coolum HeARTs we also have drumming which is just amazing, and you can see the faces of people light right up as the drumming starts.”

Coolum HeARTs provides a range of low-cost lifestyle and art classes for all people in the community, and they offer a first class for free for people to try out their offerings.

The group are also well known for their Christmas Day lunch, which they host each year in the Coolum Civic Centre, and their doors are open to everyone and the cost is free.

“You don’t need an excuse to come along, other than wanting to share Christmas with others.”

David said that in the lead-up to the lunch, they were always happy to have any volunteers on the day, especially people who can help with the pack-up.
